HGU-2A/P and HGU-26/P in Spanish Air Force service
Message 10126, 8 Mar 2005
Hi all,
A friendly guy named Carlos Gutièrrez from Marbella, Spain, passed the Best of Flightgear
website and decided that he wished to contribute the attached pictures. They are two
examples of helmets that the Spanish pilots were using in the 80`s.The first one is a
HGU-33P used by a AV-8S Harrier Matador pilot from Rota Naval Air Station [See
the page on HGU-33/P in Spanish service].The second one is a HGU-26P from Morón
AB,in the south of Spain, that was used by a F/RF-5A pilot.
Cheers,

Hi Miguel, Thanks for the additional photograph. Nice helmet graphics and an
especially interesting shot with a model of the F-5 in the camo paint the squadron
flew alongside it. The mask seems to be fitted with a mic that is connected to the left
side of the helmet.....or is it a standard "Y" cord (CX-4707/AIC type) whose
mask and helmet connections are obscurado? Cheers, DocBoink

Yes; this place sells surplus helmets from the 70´s in the Spanish Air Force. Here I got
one other helmet, which belonged to the 21th Wing flying F5 back in those years. When the
plane arrived, they got this south mediterranean camo, which made them almost invisible
during their low flights. But there was a problem; the planes were hard to see, but the
white helmet from the pilots could be seen from many "Angels" up. The solution
was painting the helmets. In this case and thanks to the name I was able to find the pilot
15 years later, who gave me a nice set of pictures of him and the helmet back in the
70´s. This HGU26 are still not hard to find and when I took the pictures of the HGU-2A/P
they had one at least there. Of course conditions are very different on them, but with
little help they are still easy to rebuild if very damage. Enjoy the Pic Miguel.

Hola Miguel: Thanks for the images of the Spanish HGU-2 helmets. They appear to be 70s
production HGU-2A/P, standard config units, from what details I can make out (with 02
receivers removed). Attached is an image of a specimen of mine that is similar, for simple
comparison. Are these surplus Spanish Air Force units that are for sale in that shop?

Hello everybody again from Sunny but very cold Spain nowadays. Finally I made it to
the one and only store in Madrid selling helmets, and managed to take some pictures at the
Hgu2 kind of helmets used here in Spain in the 70's. They are always out at much more
affordable prices as in the States I must say; if anybody interested please let me know; I
will attached 2 pictures or so, I believe my friend Alfonso has a much better example
anyhow. Now; I still don't see the difference between the models, so this
might be of 0 interest for you guys but hey! Worth trying, Miguel.
