What is an HGU-23/P? Never heard of it. Cheers, Bluelight 14
Message 1332:
HGU Type designations are assigned by USAF Aircrew Systems Division (custodian). They are
assigned chronologically, and numbers up through HGU-90 have been assigned. Some
were assigned to study helmets that were never procured. The HGU-23/P doesn't have a
military specification listed so it may only be a prototype. It uses the HGU-22/P helmet
assembly and a custom fit liner. It was requested by the USAF. In all probability, the
helmet may have been the USAF test bed for their custom fit liner system. The actual
technical reports are held by Defense Technical Information Center and while the reports
were bought and paid for by US Tax dollars, the information is not available to non
military personnel or contractors. Sen. Jesse Helms and Congressman Robin Hayes have no
problem with this arrangement as both have ignored repeated requests for access to this
information. Interestingly enough, I don't think ASD even knows what an HGU-23/P is as
their records were transferred to Maxwell AFB and supposedly to DTIC. My copy of the Type
Designation Sheets may be the only one still around (or at least that anyone can find).
Cheers All, Steve
