Gueneau 313
Latest update 9 May 2010
Message 1676, April 6, 2001:
Hi all, Thanks for the messages received about the Gueneau 313/29 helmet. Hope that some
other menbers will give more details about that subject. I think there is some confusion
between the 313/19 helmet and the 313 1-M1. The 313 1-M1 was built for the French Navy. It
was equipped with ROD goggles (dark blue goggles similar to the American B-8) or a sliding
visor (HGU-55 look alike). Clear or tinted visors were used. The oxygen mask was the Ulmer
A-13 (french made MS2201/A13).Some were modified to receive boom mikes (Breguet Alizé
crew for example ).

Hi, I have one helmet like this. Is a Gueneau-Geno 313 / 29 size small. Date : 25 / 03 /
75. The helmet is in very good condition, liner, wiring and headphones perfect. No visor,
because the original Gueneau visor is very hard to find. I have ask to Mart Aviation, but
they sold all helmets like this and do not have spare visors. I have this helmet for sale,
if there are someone interested please let me know and meke me an offer. Thank you.

Dear Sir, Your helmet saw current use with the Belgian AF. It was the helmet for student
pilots flying the Marchetti propeller aircraft. Generally a MBU-5/P mask was used also the
MS-22001 in the beginning. When using the MBU-5/P mask, the hardshell harness was equipped
with hookup pressure system to fit the helmet. It was just like the retaining straps for
the mask used with P-type helmets. Helmet can accomodate microphone assembly that can be
placed on either side of the helmet. A hole is visible in the back where the commcord plug
fits in for storage.
The helmet was made by GUENEAU-GENO, 6 Faubourg Sainte Honoré-PARIS 8°. Denomination of
the helmet is 313/29. The visor is the same model as the current HGU-55 one. It uses the
same system and well ahead of it's time.
The French marine used a similar helmet with this visor assembly. it is true that this
helmet is more a export item from the Gueneau group. Not so many were manufactured and
being complete makes it a nice addition to anyones collection of flight helmets. The
helmet could also accomodate a set of dust goggles or flight goggles like the Rhode model
or Novelthor. Currently these helmets see no more flight use and are used for SAR
exercises. They should be decommissioned soon and probably destroyed ! I hope this gives
you some info on that helmet.

Bonjour Philippe, All i can telll you is that i came across a Belgian Gueneau 313 last
week. This one had the normal "French" looks. Inner helmet and had an outer
helmet with round holes. Also goggles were used instead of a visor.
Bye Ron

Hi all, Could someone could tell me what is this helmet, which type, who used it, etc...
My understanding is that it is a French made Gueneau of the 313 series made for a foreign
contract. A friend of mine who is collecting French helmets said to me it was made for the
Belgian Air Force. I never found anything on that subject, nor articles or pictures of
pilots wearing it. Does someone could tell me where to find that helmet, and also the sun
visor for it?
Bye, Philippe

Hi All, Another P- series modification came to light while studying my copies of French AF
manuals. The French have used (at some point in time (1957)) the P-3 series helmet. For
this helmet the French adapted their own visor kit. This looks like the American version,
but has a release handle on top. This visor kit is called the Type 541.1. made by
L'Optique Scientifique. The Type 541.2 and 541.3 also exist but were used on the Gueneau
Type 313 M1. Type 541.2 for the fighter pilot (visor at a 48 degree angle) and the Type
541.3 for the bomber/navigator (visor at a 70 degree angle). This has probably something
to do with the use of a mask. For the fact sheets see the attachment. Bye HUD

Hello Steve, I believe the helmet has been used at the beginning of the 60's by the French
Air Force and Navy . Normally the Ulmer 16M Mask is used at this type of helmet and a pair
of goggles wich looks like scuba diving goggles. The helmet is worn with an inner cloth
helmet. Hope this will help a bit. Cheerio, Sven Scheffers

I recently purchased a French Flight helmet. It would appear to be the Gueneau 313. What
would be the date of usage on this helmet? Does 1978 sound right?
There was an external visor on this helmet that was removed before I purchased the helmet.
There is no comms (earphones or wire harness) inside the helmet and no oxygen mask. I
could really use some information on this helmet and I would like to find the missing
parts. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Steve (Figmo)
