CWU-27/P

Victory, Yes, VF-114 did fly with orange, and pretty much to get the flightsuits they had
to ask around for them as they were no longer in the supply system. VF-114 did the same
thing that VF-84 did when helmets were required to be 100% white reflective tape except
with the orange flightsuits. VF-213 for awhile were still wearing CWU-73's. All my
deployments VF-213 flew with green or tan and only wore the blue on no fly days or duty
days aboard the carrier.

Spanky, What about VF-114, the Fighting Aardvarks? They flew with bright orange flight
suits (in accordance with their squadron color) on a regular basis (as far as I know - I
have several pictures showing crews on active duty in and out of the cockpit - and I'm not
talking of the 50s and 60s, when literally everyone was using them, but until their
decomissioning in 1993).
Just my 2 cents though...
Cheers, Victory

Sabre,
The Black "CWU-27/P" is a Flightsuits product and not an issue item. Currently
for USN/USMC issue, flighsuits are Sage Green and Tan, Aircrew BDUs Woodland Camouflage
and Tan which became authorized as an option for non-ejection seat crewmen in October
2005. Although the black may be made of Nomex, they shouldn't be used for flight since
they are not authorized. One thing I do is check messages from NAVAIR bi-weekly if not
every week since things change. Through my years of being on the carrier I have seen Red,
Orange (not CWU-28), and black Nomex, but were only worn by the Squadron Duty Officer
(SDO) while on duty when aboard the carrier.
